Facts with Arthur
Notes > easy dopamine.
In a fully digital world where even a 1.7 second graphic in a 70 second video feels way too long; there is just so much noise it can be hard to focus on anything for long. So I started just learning stuff and writing it down pen and paper style instead of scrolling. These facts I’m writing down come from a self-assigned course that includes: history, cosmology, spirituality, and of course botany. I studied these audiobooks and online courses as if I was trying to learn. Hearing and seeing is one thing, but since the start of writing it all down I would definitely say it helps me to “..remember it now”. After a few months I’ve learned a few things as opposed to filling my head with (as many) useless 15 second clips.
“Make sure you are solving the right problems”
-Yuval N. Harari
The above quote caused a small change in my mindset.
Don’t get buried by the sands of time.
Just imagine a future society has to determine what the modern American culture was like based solely upon written records that survive as artifacts… really betting a lot that one day thousands of years from now a futuristic archaeologist would have a MacBook or iPhone to fire up considering the technical ups and downs that history shows. Consider that just since the beginning of written history we’ve seen the Romans build infrastructure that the folks living hundreds of years later had devolved to a point in which rebuilding or repairing those ancient structures was not even possible bc there wasn’t a person alive that could even fathom building projects of such an advanced type. From flip phones to quantum computing; and now the growth of ai, our memories are tricked to believing that there’s in only room for that arrow on the chart of technological advances to go one direction.
Buyer beware: there are no likes for a written note, or really any immediate outwards gratification, and those around may not love that you become a wealth of random knowledge, but over time that random knowledge will form tiny building blocks of understanding.
Understanding what? Hell if I know…essentially that nobody really knows anything and that’s rad.
..and so I don’t want to be alone representing us (with the 5 people left still romanticizing the posted written letter,) write some shit down.
