GROWING INDOORS: Anthuriums from WARM CLIMATES

This is just what one person does and is not meant as an “only” or even “better” way than any of the 9,000 other care guides out there. I’m not the best grower there is, but this stuff is solid and I have actually used it to grow my plants for years.

For low to middle elevation species of popular foliage Anthuriums like:

Anthurium crystallinum

Anthurium papillilaminum

Anthurium warocqueanum

Anthurium luxurians

Anthurium regale

Anthurium forgetii

If it isn’t prehistoric and pebbly looking.

If it isn’t specified from a cloud forest.

Hybrids and popular cultivars like: Red Crystal, Block’s, AOS, Dark Phoenix, etc

Likely if it is big and velvety and sold online.

WHAT IT WANTS:

Humidity: 55-75% (think consistent throughout the environment, be aware of constantly dry microclimates within a space. 52% cool, 20% nah)

Light: most important, 250-400fc 12-18 hr per day. Either good old modified sunlight, or full spectrum LED grow light. If you have great sunlight then I suggest about six feet from a south or west facing window and 3 feet from a north or east facing window (assuming unobstructed sunlight.. in the end a light meter is a great asset to dial it in regardless of light source. Just remember to check as seasons change just to be sure the sun doesn’t move too much on ya.)

Water: if using a substrate like mine one can expect to water twice a week. Modified/higher water quality can help with picky species (dressleri, carlablackiae, and the likes); for this I use an RO filtration system here.

Substrate: if in a controlled enclosure of some kind (grow cabinet, tent, greenhouse, idk what ya got but if it is closed up and dedicated to plants…) then I suggest my mix. If in ambient I suggest adding more tree fern fiber to hold a bit more moisture.

Pots: rands air cone all day! Durable. Lets air into the root mass.

Temperature: 65-85F. The more you can mimic the 65F at night at 85F during day they better for optimized flowering, maximum size, and perfect leaves. Many of these will be happy just like you are when it comes to temperature. 72F 24/7 is just fine in my experience.

Pest prevention: click here I use Pure Crop 1 and My Biological Control Team of beneficial organisms. Whatever you use, TREAT THEM AS IF YOU HAVE PESTS EVERY DAY, THEY ARE LURKING.

Air circulation is important but most of these plants are adaptable in this regard. If grown in a tent you need a fan if you’re running a humidifier, but you don’t need 10 fans in a 10x5 grow tent. Pick an epiphyte to put closest to the fan, they grow up in trees and are cool with a breeze, same for high light levels.

Nutrients: Always use safety gear. Be smart and follow instructions please, I got kids and don’t want to see any of y’all hurt mixing stuff up. To get you 90% of the way there for these types of plants just go with MSU k-lite from Tezula plants. There are various ways to fine tune these types of things, but maybe I’ll write a care guide for Pain In The Ass Plants and touch on some of that.

Don’t do this: get behind on pest prevention or up-pots. Follow all new trends and change up stuff every 2 weeks.
